Our engineers are challenging. They question every component; “Why is that needed?” How could it be cheaper?”
Two-axis tracker
Simple positioning - superior performance.
Whitfield Solar's revolutionary tracking system is the result of decades of practical experience.
Its in-built intelligence equips it to cope with real-world conditions such as bright edged clouds and the microprocessor-based tracking system drives two separate motor circuits that control each axis of movement. This highly optimised system requires no pre-programming or site-specific data – just position and go!
Unlike many alternative PV units that employ expensive and heavy hydraulics, Whitfield's integrated tracking unit uses small electric motors. These have proven long-term durability and reliability thanks to their more common use in car window-winder systems. 'Closed-loop' tracking means the system will continue to align with the sun even if the ground subsides or there is movement in the roof-mounting frame.
Frame
Strong, stable and secure.
Unlike conventional PV panels, the frame in Whitfield’s unit is an integral part of the design. Using aluminium extrusions for low weight and cable protection, the frame draws on years of experience from the window and door frame manufacturing industry.
Thanks to full assembly in the factory, the frame needs no on-site construction and slots directly onto the mounting legs for both roof-top and field-mounted solar sites.
Power Troughs
Tough enough to tackle the elements.
Built like an automotive headlight, each power trough contains 12 solar cells – each one about the size of a postage stamp – and diode-protection maximises the system’s tolerance to shading in real-world installations.
A single moulded lens concentrates the sun onto each cell and Whitfield’s innovative optimised cooling system enables these cells to run cooler than conventional PV panels.
The power troughs are part of Whitfield’s ‘Platform’ design approach and are compatible with a range of alternative cell technologies as they become commercially viable.
Mounting System
Easy, adaptable and aerodynamic.
Designed to suit both roof-top and ground-based solar projects, each mounting leg supports two adjacent frames.
Securing the mounting legs is straightforward. Simply select from one of the lightweight systems on offer:
- concrete tiles that sit on the ground surface
- cables that anchor to the ground or roof without any concrete
- free-standing ballasted weights
- integration with proprietary roof frames
The unit’s remarkable wind-loading performance is due to the dynamic design which reduces lift and drag by allowing air to channel through the open structure.
